Hello
I'm reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and I'm surprised how the author sometimes uses the word "since" ( I would rather have written ago )
For instance :
"He lost his elder brother a few years since."
"It is past eleven o'clock; I heard it strike some minutes since."
"Yes; nearly five years since to Robert Leaven, the coachman;"
"I was walking late one evening about a fortnight since."
Is that use usual or old fashioned or because of the ill-defined duration ?
Thank you for any reply.

Hello
I think it is old fashioned, quaint, unusual nowadays.
It does mean "ago".
