Thème anglais grammatical
Message de taconnet posté le 26-09-2009 à 09:14:10 (S | E | F)

Bonjour.

3) We want her to come every week .
4) You'd better stay instead of leaving .
5) My car broke down . I had it repaired .
6) She isn't used to drinking so much wine . She is bound to be sick .
7) Could you tell me how far is the nearest bank ? It's around 500 meters from traffic lights .
8) The red skirt is half as expensive as the black one, in other words, the black skirt is twice as expensive as the red one .
9) There used to be a pub where he would have a beer .
10) We could hardly have had no inkling that this test could have taken much time . ...

Bonjour.

Quelques remarques :
Phrase 1
Dire quelque chose à quelqu’un ──► to tell somebody something.
Après «when» pas de futur.
Rencontrer ──► to meet ; to see.

Phrase 2
De moins en moins + nom pluriel ──► fewer and fewer.
Le «on» français se traduit par un passif anglais.

Owing to = because of ──► en raison de
The game was cancelled owing to torrential rain.

Phrase 3
To want somebody to do something.
Every + singulier
Every day.

Phrase 4
« Had better» expression figée qui peut être précédée de I / you/he /she/we they et qui sigifie ferais /ferait/ferions /feriez/feraient/ mieux de.
After « had better » we use the infinitive without to.
It’s late ─ you had better hurry up.
We normally make the negative with « had better not + infinitive»
You’d better not wake me up when you come in.

In very informal speech « had» is sometimes dropped :
You better go now.

Instead of + V-ing.

Phrase 5
Faire + infinitif passif ──► to have + past participle.

Have se conjugue à tous les temps et à tous les modes.
Attention à la construction :
Have + cod + participe passé.
John a fait publier son premier roman le mois dernier.
John had his first novel last month.

Elle vient de faire repeindre sa cuisine.
She has just had her kitchen painted.

Ruth n’aime pas qu’on la prenne en photo.
Ruth doesn’t like having her picture taken.

Phrase 6
Avoir l’habitude de ──► to be used to + V-ing.
I am not used to driving on the left
Je n’ai pas l’habitude de conduire à gauche.
Dans cette expression used se prononce : [ju:st]

Expression qui permet d’exprimer une éventualité avec une quasi-certitude :

Be bound to/be sure to.
She’s bound to be late, as she always is . ──► Elle sera sûrement en retard , comme c’est toujours la cas.
You are bound to succeed ──► tu vas réussir, c’est sûr
Il est certain qu’il va accepter ──► He is bound to accept

Phrase 7
A quelle distance …de ──► How far … from
How far is the station from the High Street ? It’s only 500 yards.
Quelle distance y a-t-il de la Grand’Rue à la gare ? Il y a à peine 500 mètres.
Attention !
Dans une interrogation indirecte on ne fait pas d’inversion sujet –verbe.
exemple
Elle se demande combien de temps il lui faudra attendre avant de pouvoir revoir son mari.
She wonders how long she will have to wait until she can see her husband again.

Phrase 8
Ici il faut utiliser le comparatif.
Twice as …as
Half as …as

Phrase 9
Would et le renvoi au passé.
Quand il renvoie au passé , would exprime une habitude dans le passé, décrite comme caractéritique du sujet. Cet emploi de would se traduit par l’imparfait français.

When John was a child he would walk five miles every day to go to school.
Quand John était enfant, il faisait huit kilometres à pied tous les jours pour aller à l’école.

Used to + infinitif
La tournure used to entre souvent en concurrence avec would.
Cependant avec used to on insiste sur le fait que ce n’est plus vrai maintenant. C’est pourquoi on utilise très souvent « autrefois » dans la traduction.
I used to enjoy it but I no longer do.
Autrefois, j’aimais bien ça, mais plus maintenant.

Lorsque que l’on décrit un état dans le passé c’est used to qu’il faut employer et non pas would.

There used to be a house here.
Il y avait autrefois une maison ici.

Dans les phrases négatives et interrogatives on fait appel à l’auxiliaire « did »
They did not use to live here ──► Ils n’habitaient pas ici autrefois.
Did you use to play tennis at school ? ──► Tu jouais au tennis quand tu étais à l’école ?

Phrase 10
En anglais correct une proposition négative ne comporte qu’une seule négation.
On suit la même régle après les adverbes hardly, scarcely, barely, little, qui ont une valeur négative.
Comme ils ont une valeur négative ils s’utilisent avec any (pas avec no) et avec ever (pas avec never)

These students hardly give me any trouble.
Ces étudiants ne me donnent pratiquement aucun mal.

Réponse: Thème anglais grammatical de taconnet, postée le 05-10-2009 à 10:14:32 (S | E)
We hardly ever see our managing director.
Nous ne voyons presque jamais notre P-D.G.

Il n’y avait presque personne sur la plage.
There was hardly anybody on the beach.

On ne dit pas couramment : « there was almost nobody on the beach. » , en revanche on ne dit jamais : « there was nearly nobody on the beach.»

Notez les expressions :

Preque jamais : hardly ever.
Presque rien : hardly anything.
Presque pas de : hardly any.

Lorsqu’ un terme négatif ou restrictif comme never, nowhere, not only, no sooner ou only, seldom, hardly, little est mis en relief exceptionnellement en tête de phrase on doit faire l’inversion verbe –sujet.

Never shall we forget how much we are endebted to you.
Jamais nous n’oubierons tout ce que nous vous devons.

Little does he know what's in store for him.
Il ne se doute guère de ce qui l'attend.

Comment traduire devoir, falloir dans certains cas ?

Le présent du verbe to be suivi d'un infinif exprime diverses notions dont certaines comportent une nuance de futur.

Action projetée,convenue.
We are to see them ──► Nous devons les voir demain.

Ordre sévère.
You are to obey at once ──► Tu dois obéir immédiatement.

Nécessité.
What is to be done ? ──► Que faut-il faire ?

Actions ou arrangements prévus dans le passé = was to + infinitif.

Quand je l'ai vue, elle devait se marier la semaine suivante.
When I saw her , she was to get married the following week.
