Hello

Thank you for your correction. Just a few comments from an perspective.

5) The customs officer made them open their cases!

We would not use a "passif des structures causatives en have" here. Do you mean "They were had"? If we used the passive voice at all, we'd say "They were made". It would be more likely that a customs officer would "tell" us something in the first place: The customs office told them to open their suitcases => They were told to open their suitcases.

6)I’d prefer not to inform my parents about this choice, if you don’t mind ….

In American English, we would most likely use the subjunctive mood here: "I'd rather my parents not be informed".

7) Shakespeare didn’t write all these poems . That’s impossible !
Shakespeare can’t have written all these poems !
Impossibilité passée = can’t have written.
I'm so relieved that you didn't say "Shakespeare hasn't written all these poems". Anyone who has been on this site for a while will understand the humour

Hello,
petite précision supplémentaire:
3)It’s not necessary for you to ask for permission ! (3 different sentences! )
You don’t have to ask for permission
You don’t need to ask for permission
You needn’t ask for permission

No, you needn't .
No, you needn't ask for permission (auxiliaire modal qui prend la négation et est suivi d'une base verbale)

Yes, you have to ask for permission.
Yes, you need to ask for permission (verbe lexical normal, suivi d'un infinitif complet et qui utilise l'auxiliaire do)

Do you need to ask for permission?
Yes, I do.
Yes, I need to ask for permission
No, I don't
No, I don't need to ask for permission.

Hello,

Thank you here4u, Notrepere and Gerondif for the clarifications.
I'll add that "You needn’t ask for permission" does have a past form which is both correct and often heard:
"You needn't have asked for permission" (Ce n'était pas la peine de demander / il ne fallait pas te donner cette peine !)

Hello, aneth estragon.
"You needn't (shouldn't) have asked for permission"; vous n'auriez pas dû demander la permission.(rather a past conditional than a past form in my opinion, it is a piece of advice)

It is and isn't a past form.
As need as an auxiliary verb doesn't have a preterite, then you keep it as it is:
He said that I needn't come. (auxiliary verb)
He said that I didn't have to come. (lexical verb)
He said that I didn't need to come (lexical verb)

He said that I shouldn't have come.
He said that I needn't have come. ok, need has a past tense (rather a past conditional here) although it is still written "need".

a bit like:
"You mustn't arrive late!!"
Pardon? What did he say ??"
"He said that you mustn't arrive late" where we keep mustn't because "didn't have to" would have a different meaning.

Thank you gerondif
You're right.
Switching modal verbs from the present to the past is always tricky since it drastically changes the context. The best way to "hear it" without being distracted by possible changes of context is to use reported speech. (They said you didn't have to ask for permission. vs. They said you needn't have asked for permission. It's very striking.)
