Hello!
Here is the correction some of you are expecting so eagerly... I know you're curious about the abacus, but I don't want this correction to be mainly about it... Therefore, I tried to develop the translation a little more than usually because I wouldn't like you to forget that it's the main part of the exercise...

Some of you neglected it a little (I understand it is, in a way, much less challenging than the other parts,) and some enormous mistakes (Irregular verbs or basic tenses ) made me suffer...
Most of you remained very concentrated... in spite ot he holiday! Congratulations to all of you...
There we go...

1) Lorsque le petit Marc est tombé, un hurlement terrible secoua toute la maison et les poils du chat se hérissèrent sur son dos.

When little Mark fell down, a terrible howling shook the whole house and the cat’s hair bristled on its back!

- ‘little Mark’ (attention à l’orthographe!) ; pas de déterminant (un adjectif ne suffit pas à déterminer un nom. Pour déterminer un nom, on utilise une subordonnée, ou une proposition introduite par ‘of’ qui précise le nom.) le noM peut aussi être unique( the sun). Ici, il y a de nombreux petits garçons, prénommés "Mark" ...
- tomber = to fall down.
- hurlement : howl, scream, yell
- to shake, I shook, shaken = secouer.
- toute la maison = la maison entière => the whole house.
- to bristle = to stand on end ; 'le poil du chat'= pelage => peut être 'fur' ou hair' ou 'coat'.
le chat est en général du féminin an anglais ... sauf si l'on veut parler d'un gros matou (a Tom cat). J'ai choisi de le laisser neutre ...

2) Il est grand temps que tu comprennes que tu dois te défendre seul dans la vie maintenant que tu es adulte.

It’s high time you understood that you must fend for yourself alone in life now that you’re an adult.

- it’s time = il est temps )
- it’s high time = il est grand temps ( + preterit modal (qui indiquent
- It’s about time = il serait temps. ) le mode irréel)

- se défendre = to hold one’s own = fend off = stand for oneself
- se débrouiller = to fend (off) by oneself; to manage; to get by; to take care of ;
- être adulte = an adult; a grown-up; fully grown. (ne pas oublier l’article indéfini devant un nom attribut).

3) Regarder les étoiles filantes dans le ciel d’août est reposant et amusant surtout si l’on fait un voeu à chaque fois que l’on en aperçoit une !

Watching the shooting stars in the skies of August is both relaxing and funny especially if you make a wish everytime you catch a glimpse of one.

- étoile filante = a falling star = a shooting star.
- Faire un voeu = to MAKE a wish.
- apercevoir = Catch sight of; to glimpse, to catch a glimpse of;

4) A peine avait-elle terminé son travail que son petit ami sonna à la porte pour l'emmener voir le film qu'elle voulait voir depuis qu'elle avait 12 ans.

Hardly had she finished her work than (when) her boyfriend rang at the door to take her to watch the film she had wanted to see since she was 12.
- hardly = semi négatif – pas de négation avec lui – Lorsqu’il commence la phrase ou la proposition, il impose une inversion du sujet (= langue soignée et formelle) = Hardly + inversion du Sujet + thaN/when …
- to ring, rang, rung = sonner.
- to watch a film (a movie)
- le désir de voir le film était antérieur à l’arribée du garçon => past perfect. 'she had wanted'
- ‘depuis qu’il avait 12 ans’ = moment précis => since. (qui appartient au passé révolu => prétérit).

5) J’ai entendu les sirènes des pompiers et du SAMU et 10 minutes plus tard, les blessés étaient transportés à l’hôpital à toute vitesse.

I’ve heard the sirens of the firefighers and of the emergency services howl and 10 minutes later, the wounded were rushed to the hospital.

-SAMU = emergency service; paramedics
- to howl = hurler (laisser l’infinitif complet sous-entend que j’ai entendu l’action entière, jusqu’à l’arrivée des secours et le départ des blessés. –ing aurait signifié que j’aurais entendu l’action en cours de déroulement. )
- L'hôpital est déterminé, c'est celui qui est proche du lieu de l'accident.

We can see the straw in the eyes of others but not the beam in our own.
L’on peut voir la paille dans l’œil de son voisin, mais pas la poutre dans le nôtre.
Attention ! bean = haricot; beam = rayon, ici, = poutre.

c) /STRAW/CAMEL/IT/THE/THE/BREAKS/’S/’S/THAT/LAST/BACK/

It’s the last straw that breaks the camel’s back.
C’est la dernière goutte qui fait déborder le vase.

d) /BLACK/IT/THE/THE/THAT/CALLS/KETTLE/POT/IS/

It’s the pot that calls the kettle black.
C’est l’hôpital qui se moque de la charité.

3) ABACUS : Slide the abacus beads (letters) along the wires (lines) to form 10 related words (belonging to the same theme) reading down. They’re NOT animals … but you’ll still realize this is no game!

Nous étions bien … ‘à la plage’. On dirait que vous ne vous souveniez plus de ce vocabulaire, pourtant très utile en ce moment ! Bon courage pour le 50 qui est en ligne depuis hier soir, et à tous d'avoir tant et si bien travaillé!
