EO/Myths and heroes
Message de capucine1 posté le 01-05-2017 à 17:52:59 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
je passe mon EO du Bac d'anglais dans quelques jours... Si vous pouviez me donner quelques conseils et corrections j'en serais ravie !
Je vous remercie par avance de votre aide.

I’m going to talk about the notion of myths and heroes, but first of all what’s a hero? When you ask someone what’s a hero, he might say it’s someone perfect, or almost the same answer. Indeed, a hero is someone who inspires people thanks to his noble qualities, at first disabled athletes and “heroes” are nothing like each other. However, comparing to 2004, in 2016 the cumulative audience and broadcast time of the Paralympics games had incredibly increased. So we can wonder what kind of heroes we need. First we will see that some heroes inspire us, then that we need them for their devotion and finally that they can reconcile and unit people.

As we said, a hero may have many human qualities and must have realized heroic actions to be considered as a hero. Nowadays, in our society, firemen, policemen, soldiers or even anonymous are considered as heroes by many people. For example, on September the 11th of 2001, the Twin towers were destroyed by terrorists; every fireman, soldier, policeman, and anonymous person, who helped many other people during this horrible disaster are heroes. Thanks to their courage, many people have survived this disaster. Actually, firemen or policemen and so on, are a bit like superheroes, I mean Superman save lives as those persons do. Moreover, as superheroes, they have exceptional behaviour and values to educate children who are expected to tend to be like them. It is the same for adults, heroes transmit values and are expected to take a leaf out of them.

As everyday heroes who put their life in danger to save others, Nelson Mandela is also part of the heroes we need for their devotion. According to me, Mandela is an icon and a model for everyone. He was fighting against racism but his fight for the defense of blacks’ legal rights led him to jail. After 27 years in jail, having fought to abolish apartheid and bring people together, he became president of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was the man who had reconciled a majority of blacks and whites in South Africa. Even though he was condemned to the life sentence, he managed to forgive the whites who did it thanks to his noble qualities, his intelligence, and his forgiveness. He was a unionist and he decreased the racism war. Finally, Nelson Mandela had very important roles in the history of South Africa and became a real hero even a myth at times.

As Mandela, Oscar Pistorius is one of the heroes who fought for a cause and aims at gathering and uniting people. In class we studied a document about disabled athletes, and one disabled athlete who could be defined as hero is Oscar Pistorius. His story is intense, to be without legs, and to become the epitome of excellence in the very field where you are not supposed to excel: that is the stuff of legends. Indeed, Pistorius, a South African sprint runner, competes at both the Paralympic Games and Olympic Games. In South Africa they loved him for it. Whether they are black or white, athletics-loving or not, his story inspired a country that is quick to cleave along racial lines. He shattered those barriers. He was just what he was: the Blade Runner, the hero. He is the sort of hero that can reconcile and unit people.

To conclude, we were wondering what kind of heroes we needed, in fact there isn’t only one definition of hero. Heroes or Myths have a capacity to change the minds of many people, to help them and to change the course of history. They do courageous things, they fight for something or want to help others. Yet, are heroes always morally perfect?
