Past participle/help
Message from baodali posted on 15-12-2015 at 14:29:20 (D | E | F)
Hi everybody,
good evening, meeting a doubtful point,I did some exercises. The original test is
I should like the matter___(settle) immediately.
I filled in "to be settled", but the referenced key is "settled". I am confused.Which one is right? and why?
Thanks a lot for your answers.

Hello Baodali,
I think that settled is right but sorry I don't know why it is right.
Thank you.

Hello,
I'd like (I would like) this matter settled ...is the correct sentence.
I'd like (I would like) to get this matter settled ...is correct too

Here it's no use writing 'be settled'; it is a passive form thus you have to write 'settled', the matter will be settled.

Hello,
'I should like the matter___(settle) immediately' is a pretty weird sentence to begin with, 'I should like' implies that you don't like whatever it is at this moment but given some other reason you ought to like it. 'I should like him' means I don't like him but maybe because he is very friendly I ought to. 'I should like' in your example sentence doesn't make too much sense, it sounds like a very old turn of phrase, how old is the exercise?
If it was 'I would like the matter ____(settled) immediately', there would be no problem with the answer 'I would like the matter to be settled immediately' the 'to be' adds extra emphasis to settled but the response 'I would like the matter settled immediately' would be more common.
'I should like the matter settled immediately' sounds very old fashioned.

Thanks to everybody for your replies,
I can learn this sentence by heart, but is "settled" in this sentence an attribute or object...?
Thanks a lot!

Hello,
'Settled' would be an adjective.
An object is the recipient of a verb and an attribute qualifies a noun, neither of which 'settled' is doing in this sentence.
A similar sentence could be 'I'd like the coffee hot', 'hot' is performing the same role as 'settled' in our sentence but in this sentence its a lot clearer to see that it is an adjective.
